Postarthroscopic Infection in the Knee following Medical or Dental Procedures

Abstract: Knee infection is a relatively rare complication after arthroscopic knee surgery (Babcok et al., 2002), with reported incidences ranging from 0.1% to 3.4% (Babcok et al., 2002 and Bert et al., 2007). Although postoperative dental and surgical procedures were formerly considered a risk factor for infection in arthroplasty patients, the American Dental Association (ADA) and Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery (AAOS) no longer recommend prophylactic antibiotics for patients with prosthetic joints and do not make recom… Show more

“…Some risk factors such as open arthrotomy, foreign bodies (including ACL grafts), age 50 years and older, tourniquet time > 60 min, remote body-site infections, open wounds, postoperative medical/dental procedures, obesity, diabetes mellitus, altered immune response, systemic illness, cancer, lifestyle factors including nutritional status, tobacco use, coexisting corticosteroid therapy, osteo/rheumatoid arthritis, preoperative shaving, length of preoperative hospitalization have all been described in contributing to an increase in infection rates after arthroscopy. 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 17 , 18 Our patient was 65 years old and had osteoarthritis which may be considered as risk factors for postarthroscopic infection.…”

“…To demonstrate the antimicrobial properties, the resulting composite coatings were tested against S. aureus . This microbe is considered to be one of the main causes of infection in orthopedic implants38 and was hence used for testing the biocidal properties of the nZnO coatings. For these latter studies, the approaches included counting the proportions of live and dead bacteria on the coatings, monitoring microbial activity with a lactate production assay, as well as electron microscopy to observe coating integrity and the presence of any bacteria.…”
