Post-Variscan (end Carboniferous-Early Permian) basin evolution in Western and Central Europe

Abstract: The Variscan orogeny, resulting from the collision of Laurussia with Gondwana to form the supercontinent of Pangaea, was followed by a period of crustal instability and re-equilibration throughout Western and Central Europe. An extensive and significant phase of Permo-Carboniferous magmatism led to the extrusion of thick volcanic successions across the region (e.g. NE German Basin, NW part of the Polish Basin, Oslo Rift, northern Spain). Coeval transtensional activity led to the formation of more than 70 rift … Show more

“…Both the Danish Basin and the North German Basin were initiated in relation to these magmatic and tectonic events. Lithospheric stretching in the thermally weakened crust-upper-mantle formed an important basin-generating mechanism leading to deep sedimentary basins (Van Wees et al 2000;Frederiksen et al 2001;Scheck-Wenderoth & Lamarche 2005;McCann et al 2006). The Oslo-Skagerrak rift and graben system were also formed as part of these events.…”

“…Subsequent to the Variscan Orogeny during the Westphalian basin formation took place in the Stephanian-Autunian in both the internal and external Variscides. Approximately 70 basins developed in the Western and Central Europe within a relatively short time span (McCann et al, 2006). Most of these basins trace long-lived Variscan fault systems.…”

“…The filling of the basins generally coincided with an overall change to semi-arid climate (Stephanian-Early Permian). Small isolated grabens with terrestrial infill represent a challenge for basin to basin stratigraphic correlations (McCann et al, 2006).…”
