Post‐traumatic stress disorder and depressive symptoms following a Herdsmen attack: The role of life meaning in mediating trait mindfulness

Abstract: It is well established that mindfulness is beneficial in decreasing post‐traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression symptoms, but the explanatory pathway and processes through which this happens are still not clear. The present study investigated two mediation models that explored the psychological process of presence of meaning in life as a mechanism connecting mindfulness to reduced PTSD and depressive symptoms in survivors of a violent attack. A sample of 577 survivors of the Fulani herdsmen attack com… Show more

“…Items (e.g., ‘My life has a clear sense of purpose’) are rated on a 7-point Likert-type scale, ranging from 1 ( absolutely untrue ) to 7 ( absolutely true ), with higher scores indicating greater presence of meaning in life. The scale has demonstrated very good validity and reliability indices (Steger et al, 2006) within a Nigerian population (Aliche et al, 2021b, 2022). The present study obtained an alpha coefficient of .87 for the subscale.…”

“…This short form, used as a state measure, has demonstrated a good convergent validity and an internal consistency reliability coefficient (α = .92) (Brown & Ryan, 2003). The MAAS has demonstrated good psychometric properties when used with traumatised Nigerian samples (Aliche et al, 2021). In the present study, results of the principal axis factor analysis supported a single factor structure of MAAS with a reliability coefficient alpha of .91.…”
