The mediating role of positive reappraisal and self-compassion on the relationship between mindfulness and posttraumatic growth in patients with cancer

“…In the present study, the relationship between mindfulness and self-care in cancer patients was significant. These results are in line with previous research (Aliche, 2023;Liu et al, 2021;Mehta et al, 2019). The results showed that mindfulness techniques are related to managing the adverse effects of treatment and symptoms of cancer progression, which leads to increased self-care behaviors during treatment (Mehta et al, 2019).…”

“…notably, existing research underscores the important role of the combination of cognitive and emotional factors in promoting PTG, particularly among cancer patients and women coping with breast cancer (Kuswanto et al, 2020). A recent study conducted by Aliche (2023) in Nigeria, involving 550 patients with various cancer types highlighted the potential of mindfulness-based therapies in supporting cognitive-emotional processes, including positive reappraisal skills and self-compassion, which are instrumental in fostering PTG in cancer patients.…”

“…Self-compassion means being connected with one's own suffering and pain instead of avoiding or disconnecting from it, creating a desire to alleviate the pain and being kind to oneself. It also encompasses non-judgmental attitudes towards inadequacies, pain, and failures because the individual experience is part of broader personal experiences (Akbarzadeh & Zahrakar, 2022;Campagna, 2022). Moreover, self-compassion does not confront self-threats because in this cognitive process, the individual does not consider others' evaluations and standards in self-assessment (AghaDavoud Marnani et al, 2022;Aliche, 2023;Aminifar et al, 2023).…”
