“…Hence, we infer that the PTP in patient M.N. may have been evoked by HLA antibodies which is in line with a few earlier reports (Vaughan-Neil et al, 1975;Zeigler et al, 1975). However, we cannot rule out with certainty that uncommon antibodies such as Bak(a) or Lek(a) known to cause PTP in rare cases (R. H. Aster, personal communication, 1984;Boizard & Wautier, 19 84) may have been involved.…”

“…One of these patients has been identified as lacking the platelet-specific antigen Baka, first identified by Van dem Borne et al [20]. HLA antigens have also been implicated, but not shown conclusively, to cause the syndrome [19,21]. In these cases, the patients studied have been typed as having all known platelet-specific antigens and in their serum only very high titers of HLA antibodies are identifiable.…”

“…The syndrome may occur in men and nulliparous women, whether sensitized by previous transfusions (8) or not (9,10). It has been described in a Zwapositive person (8), and following sensitization to PIB'-positive platelets (11). 1 case has resulted from infusion of plasma in which platelet fragments were present in abundance (12).…”

“…The disorder is self-limiting, spontaneous recovery occurring presumably when antigen-antibody complexes have been cleared from the circulation. Most cases have been treated with corticosteroids, but there is general agreement that steroids do not influence the course of the disease, even though occasional cases appear to have responded (10,11,21). Typically, thrombocytopenia lasts for 10-30 d; 2 untreated cases also recovered within this span of time (15,22).…”
