Post Prandial Hyperglycemia: A Real Threat for Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

Abstract: The aim of this article is to evaluate the impact of postprandial hyperglycemia in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Postprandial hyperglycemia is a major determinant in overall glycemic control. Diabetic mellitus is an endocrine disorder steadily increasing worldwide, particularly in the developing countries like India. Diabetic patients are at high risk of cardiovascular events and mealtime plasma glucose fluctuations are important cardiovascular risk factors in type 2 diabetic patients. Diabete… Show more

“…5,6 It is characterized by resistance to insulin production and increasing decline of pancreatic β-cell function associated with increasing hyperglycaemia. 7 Postprandial hyperglycaemia is among the first signs of abnormal glucose homeostasis associated with type 2 diabetes and is evidently overestimated in diabetic patients with fasting high glucose level. 8 Macrovascular and microvascular diabetic complications such as, neuropathy, retinopathy, and nephropathy have been linked to postprandial hyperglycaemia.…”
