Post-operative pulmonary complications after non-cardiothoracic surgery

Abstract: Post-operative pulmonary complications (PPCs) occur in 5–10% of patients undergoing non-thoracic surgery and in 22% of high risk patients. PPCs are broadly defined as conditions affecting the respiratory tract that can adversely influence clinical course of the patient after surgery. Prior risk stratification, risk reduction strategies, performing short duration and/or minimally invasive surgery and use of anaesthetic technique of combined regional with general anaesthesia can reduce the incidence of PPCs. Ate… Show more

“…The removal of respiratory secretions is an important concern during the rehabilitation phase after cardiac surgery and postoperative pain can interfere with the elimination of respiratory tract secretions. The secretions of the respiratory tract cannot be eliminated, producing atelectasis, pneumonia, and increased mortality [1]. Hand stroke with chest wall vibration is a widely accepted method of physiotherapy, which helps cleanse the respiratory system.…”

“…However, the predictive value for PPC of some of these factors remains controversial, including preoperative pulmonary function, arterial blood gas analysis, and postoperative analgesia. 3,4 There is also scarcity in studies regarding postoperative pulmonary complication from south India. 4 Hence, this study was done to find the clinical and demographic risk factors for PPC following gastrointestinal surgery.…”

“…Post-operative pulmonary complications (PPCs) occur in 5-10% of patients undergoing non-thoracic surgery and in 22% of high risk patients. 22 Postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs) are common, costly, and increase patient mortality. Changes to the respiratory system occur immediately on induction of general anaesthesia: respiratory drive and muscle function are altered, lung volumes reduced, and atelectasis develops in > 75% of patients receiving a neuromuscular blocking drug.…”
