Post-impact mechanical characterization of HMPE yarns

Abstract: The present work evaluates the mechanical behaviour of High Modulus Polyethylene (HMPE) yarns after being impacted by sudden axial loads. The influence of loading conditions on the structural integrity of yarns is assessed by tensile, fatigue, and creep tests before and after the impact events. The impact loads were inferred by drop-weight adopting a 300mm height and weights corresponding to 4, 5, and 6% of Yarn Breaking Load (YBL). At 5% YBL, most specimens fail after the impact, and at 6% YBL, all specimens … Show more

“…Although there is no data in the literature for all torsional conditions, the results presented in Table 2 can be compared to specific literature cited in the introduction [15][16][17]. In the reference works, a breaking force for HMPE of 500.84 Newtons with a standard deviation of 16.37 Newtons was measured [15], but the torsion used was not specified, although the need for adherence to the standard suggests that it was 60 turns per metre. For polyamide, the average breaking strength found for an untwisted condition was 210.47 N with a standard deviation of 3.78 N [16].…”

“…The dynamic requests that act under these anchor cables have gained scientific focus, studying fatigue and impact loads that act on such systems. Sometimes these studies address conditions of combined loads, such as mechanical characterization after impact loading (Belloni et al, 2021). Other times they address environmental conditions such as temperature and humidity associated with dynamic loading.…”
