Possible Mechanisms and Special Clinical Considerations of Curcumin Supplementation in Patients with COVID-19

Abstract: The novel coronavirus outbreak caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) was recognized in late 2019 in Wuhan, China. Subsequently, the World Health Organization declared coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) as a pandemic on 11 March 2020. The proportion of potentially fatal coronavirus infections may vary by location, age, and underlying risk factors. However, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is the most frequent complication and leading cause of death in critically ill p… Show more

“…However, there is a lack of information suggesting that curcumin may have a positive role for treating CVDs in patients with COVID-19. Despite this, some review papers have examined the potential effects of curcumin in the treatment of COVID-19, in particular the value of curcumin supplementation as an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant compound in patients with COVID-19 [ 68 ]. Moreover, the potential of effect of curcumin may include inhibiting the entry of virus to the cells, inhibiting encapsulation of the virus and viral protease, and modulating different cellular signaling pathways, for example curcumin has strong inhibitory effect on nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) [ 68 ].…”

“…Besides the antibacterial properties, it demonstrates antifungal and antiviral activities. The antioxidant and antiinflammatory effects of curcumin may also play a role in this regard (Heidari, Mohammadi, & Sahebkar, 2021; Moghadamtousi et al, 2014; Tyagi, Singh, Kumari, Kumari, & Mukhopadhyay, 2015; Zheng et al, 2020).…”

“…Three curcuminoids (Curs) such as Cur 1, Cur 2 and Cur 3 in turmeric products are well-known for their antiinflammatory, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory effects, 1) and recently interesting approach of its supplementation for declared coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). [2][3][4] Based on chemical antioxidant properties, it has a wide range of pharmacological preservation for infection, cancer, nerve disease and aging. Thus, directions for future investigations to be undertaken in the chemistry of Curs have been proposed.…”
