Possible applications of metal nanoparticles in antimicrobial food packaging

Abstract: Antimicrobial packaging is an important kind of active packaging that can release antimicrobial substances in order to enhance the quality and safety of food during extended storage. The development of nanotechnology opens the opportunity for innovation in many industrial sectors, including food packaging. Nanoparticles with antimicrobial properties can act as active components when added to a polymer, leading to a prolonged protective function of food packaging material. The main objective of this work was to… Show more

“…Wrappings in low-density polyethylene (LDPE) films with Ag NPs have been found to lengthen the sustainability of chicken fillets [167]. Moreover, the exposure of the films to UV radiation for 20 minutes exhibited a bactericidal effect on Pseudomonas fluorescens (P. fluorescens) and S. aureus [169].…”

“…-Inorganic and metal oxide-based nanoparticles. The use of metal oxide-based nanoparticles, such as ZnO, MgO, CuO, and TiO 2 , had been explored as antimicrobial agents to be applied in food packaging because their high stability and potent antimicrobial activities (Garcia et al, 2018;Hoseinnejad et al, 2018;Dobrucka and Ankiel, 2019).…”

“…Synthetic antimicrobial agents are frequently used due to their excellent performance. [176][177][178][179][180][181][182] However, the addition of synthetic antimicrobial compound may cause lack of natural flavor. The awareness of consumers about their potential toxicity also limits their use in food packaging applications.…”
