Possibility of the Abrasive Wear Resistance Determination with Scratch Tester

Abstract: Abrasion wear resistance is very important in many applications and it is not a surprise that there are many laboratory test methods for its determination. In this article, a possibility of the abrasive wear resistance determination with scratch tester, as a relatively easy and quick test method, was analysed and compared with the standard test method for pin abrasion testing (ASTM G 132). Materials used in the tests were: two ferrous-based coatings (deposited on an Al-Si alloy substrate with atmospheric plasm… Show more

“…The scratch test, sliding a rigid indenter of controlled shape under a controlled load and speed against a smooth surface, mimics the abrasion process and has been used to evaluate the abrasion resistance of various microstructures [17][18][19]. However, the conventional scratch tests are mostly done on the initial surface [20][21][22][23][24], which can be very different to those that form during the abrasion process, e.g.…”

“…Failure consequence is expressed through the general assessment (Vencl, Manic, Popovic, and Mrdak 2010), which also considers whether the failure in question affect neighbouring machines in the production process (if there are any) -the so-called 'domino effect'. If there is no such effect, the allotted assessment is reduced by 1.…”
