Possibilities for discrimination between chewing of coca leaves and abuse of cocaine by hair analysis including hygrine, cuscohygrine, cinnamoylcocaine and cocaine metabolite/cocaine ratios

Abstract: Contrary to the illegal use of any form of manufactured cocaine, chewing of coca leaves and drinking of coca tea are allowed and are very common and socially integrated in several South American countries. Because of this different legal state, an analytical method for discrimination between use of coca leaves and abuse of processed cocaine preparations is required. “…The pyrrolidine alkaloids hygrine and cuscohygrine ( Figure 1) are present in coca leaves [2][3][4][5] and in urine from coca chewers but were neither detected in seized illicit cocaine nor in urine samples from consumers of cocaine (detection limit of 100 ng/mL). [7] Both alkaloids have not been described by other authors in any of the numerous reports about the composition of seized cocaine samples. “…For instance, an interesting paper comments on the possibility of discrimination between cocaine abusing and chewing coca leaves [67], being the latter legal in some countries. The authors have used the ratios between the concentrations of several markers and cocaine to discriminate those consumption patterns.…”
