Positive corona inception in point-plane gaps as influenced by a surrounding dielectric enclosure

Abstract: This paper is aimed at investigating the inception voltage of the positive corona in point-to-plane gaps in atmospheric air as influenced by a surrounding dielectric enclosure. First, the method of calculation of the inception voltage is explained. It is based on the criterion of self-sustained growth of onset streamers. This calls for calculating the electric field in the vicinity of the stressed point with and without the surrounding enclosure. Then, the calculated inception voltages are compared with those … Show more

“…It has been previously assumed [8] to equal 1/2. This model was applied before [9] for calculating the corona onset voltage V 0+ on coated and bare conductors in conductor-to-plane gaps and how V 0+ is influenced by atmospheric humidity [10] in wire-to-plane gaps, by temperature [4] in rod-to-plane gaps and by a dielectric enclosure [11] surrounding a stressed point-plane gap. Here, it is applied for coaxial-cylinder and wire-plane ESP configurations.…”
