Positioning embedded software maintenance within industrial maintenance

Abstract: Little is known about of how software embedded in complex industrial technical systems is maintained. In this paper, we identify industrial maintenance process steps and position software maintenance activities within them. We do this in the context of JAS 39 Gripen, a multi-role combat aircraft developed by Saab.

“…These challenges can to some extent be met by the provision of appropriate information logistic solutions to all stakeholder of the maintenance process through utilization of new and innovative information and communication technology (ICT), i.e. the approach of e‐maintenance (Lee, 2003; Levrat et al , 2008; Karim et al , 2008a, b, 2009). One important part of this solution is computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) that contain relevant data and information for maintenance purposes.…”

“…Hence, risk management includes a process, as well as information security. However, maintenance may also be viewed as a process as described in IEC 60300-3-14, which is used by Karim et al (2008aKarim et al ( ), 2008bKarim et al ( , 2009 within the context of eMaintenance to emphasize information logistic aspects instead of technology. From an information security perspective, one aspect of the process approach is that the users are encouraged to emphasize the importance of the following (adapted from ISO/IEC 27000):…”

“…Furthermore, the PDCA model can also be seen in the maintenance process described in IEC 60300-14 (maintenance and maintenance support), which has been used in the context of eMaintenance (see e.g. Karim et al 2008aKarim et al , 2008bKarim et al , 2009. Even though the model is used in slightly different ways, its role is to highlight the importance of continuous improvement.…”

“…Innovative use of Information & Communication Technology is important for such improvements. [1][2][3][4][5] However, the nature of collected condition data usually violates common statistical assumptions, such as samples being taken from an independently, identically distributed normal distribution. Naturally, the violations of these assumptions differ from being of no practical consequence to invoking serious errors.…”
