Islamic banks (IBs) have been criticized as not being genuinely Islamic, and the methods in measuring their performances have been debatable. While the literature on IBs performance has been emerging, such studies precisely assess its recent development remains absent. Therefore, we aim to evaluate the development of scholarly articles that measure IBs’ performances. We employ bibliometric analysis and sample related articles from the Scopus database. We find that the development of IBs performance literature may be understood by 111 peer-reviewed journal articles, 4 conference papers, 1 book, and 1 book series. We analyze these materials based on publication sources, country and institution affiliation, keywords association, and cluster dendrogram. Our model that quantifies the keywords association and cluster dendrogram provides a novelty in assessing IBs performance literature development. Future studies may replicate our model to cluster and identify the keyword associations from the unstructured data sources.

Globalization has led to a growing increase in financial institutions, as well as to the diversification of their services, due to the international circulation of capital. In view of this increase, the Angolan market has become progressively more competitive, making efficiency a major factor in its survival in the market.This study aimed to analyse the determinants of efficiency in the Angolan banking sector by examining the period from 2014 to 2019. To achieve this objective, we first applied the non-parametric data envelopment analysis methodology to estimate the efficiency levels of banks, and in the second phase, we used a multiple linear regression to obtain an explanatory model of Angolan banking efficiency.In the first stage, the classic Banker, Charnes and Cooper model was used with input orientation, employing the variables of staff expenses and deposits as the inputs, and the total credit as the output, ranking the banks descending order of their efficiency scores. In the second stage, through multiple linear regression, efficiency was expressed as a function of variables measuring the capital adequacy, asset quality, management quality, profitability and liquidity of the banks under study.The variables that proved to be statistically significant in the efficiency of Angolan banking were the solvency ratio, the relationship between liabilities and equity and return on equity.

The financial systems of the West Balkan countries are mainly based on banks. For an efficient financial system, it is of immense importance that the banks operating in it do so with high levels of efficiency. Furthermore, efficiency is needed when it comes to involving banking institutions in the financial flows in order to maintain sustainability of the financial construction. The aim of this paper is to determine whether there is a difference in efficiency between the considered countries and thus to show which changes the decisionmakers have to make in order to improve the efficiency of their banking systems. We analyze data from the revised financial statements of all banks operating in Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Serbia for the period from 2015 to 2019, using loans and investment as input variables and interest income, non-interest income and net income as output variables. The results obtained from the output-oriented DEA model with a variable return to scale have shown higher efficiency levels in North Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro, while Serbia and Albania show lower efficiency. The individual analyses have shown that in order to improve efficiency levels, improvement is needed more in the correction of the investment amounts then in loan placements.
