The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) has gained attention from multiple viewpoints, including the sharing of information at the state level. News outlets, including print, electronic and social media, have extensively covered the CPEC from various angles and with various ideological perspectives. Qualitative and quantitative studies on the treatment of the CPEC in the print media reveal that the CPEC is framed in positive terms and the project is deemed as a game changer and solution to Pakistan’s economic problems. This research study uses qualitative methodology with the dialectical reasoning approach proposed by Fairclough. The study is aimed at critically evaluating the arguments presented in the editorials and opinion columns of the English newspaper Dawn. The study sample comprises all the editorials and opinion columns for the years 2021 and 2022. Dawn produced four editorials and three opinion columns in the two years about CPEC. Analysis of these texts reveals that the authors are challenging the dominant positive discourses on the CPEC. Government and policymakers are criticized for the lack of transparency. CPEC is now not viewed as a game changer and panacea for all problems of Pakistan. The hopes for economic prosperity are waning and the newspaper is arguing for a major shift in the discourse on CPEC. The arguments presented in the texts challenge the win-win narrative.

Development and Sustainability of Rural Economy of Pakistan through Local Community Support for CPEC

This paper investigates the local community support for the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) using the lens of social exchange theory. The study examines the direct effect of social, economic, cultural, and environmental factors on the local community support for CPEC projects, and the resultant impacts on the development and sustainability of the rural economy of Pakistan. The study also explores the moderation effect of media influence on shaping positive perceptions of CPEC among the local populace. The local communities at the CPEC route which are affected or can be affected by the project were targeted for data collection using a structured questionnaire. The collected valid data (N = 259) were thoroughly analyzed by obtaining reliability and validity statistics, a correlation matrix, multiple regression, moderation analysis, and hypotheses testing. Our results substantiate that the local community support for the CPEC project is heavily dependent on social, economic, cultural, and environmental factors and that there is a positive influence of media impact as an opinion-maker in the local community regarding the CPEC. The CPEC is expected to develop the rural economy, particularly through improvements in agriculture and allied activities, thereby providing livelihoods and income-generating opportunities to the rural masses. The article is important for regulators, the CPEC authority, government bodies, and the relevant community.

This study aimed at evaluating print media’s agenda regarding China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), flagship Belt and Road initiative, and a huge development plan between China and Pakistan. For this purpose, researchers collected data from a Pakistani newspaper The News International and a Chinese newspaper Daily China to compare the portrayal of CPEC. Quantitative analysis was used for collection of data, which was collected through purposive sampling. The timeframe of the study is from January 1, 2018, to June 30, 2018. The results supported the study’s objectives and hypotheses. It is concluded that both the newspapers covered CPEC; however, The News International published more CPEC-related project stories than China Daily. The former paper published 57 news stories, while the latter published 33. The variables of the study were revenue and economy, services and employment, transport & infrastructure, energy & power, investment and security, debt and economic aid, environmental destruction, cheap labor, ethnic conflict and international, and sovereignty. Study revealed that both newspapers framed the project positively, although some frames were negative.
