Porosity Behaviour of Insulated Iron Powder Compounds

Abstract: The goal of the present paper is to determine the porosity behavior of new development insulated iron powder compounds without and with different additions of aluminum alloy Alumix 321 (5 and 10 wt%). A significant disadvantage of PM processing is the presence of porosity. Pores act as crack initiators and, due to their presence, the distribution of stress is inhomogeneous across the cross-section and leads to the reduction of the effective load bearing area. Quantitative image analysis of investigated materia… Show more

“…the dimensional characteristic D circle (representing the diameter of the equivalent circle showing the same area as the metallographic cross-section of the pore) and aspect ratio A (representing the ratio between the major axis and minor axis of an ellipse equivalent to pore) according to [21][22][23]. the aspect ratio considers the stress and the strain situation in the process of AM.…”

“…the metal powder was mixed with a binder which is then spread over patterned masks and cured layer by layer. therefore, a complex examination of porosity needs the quantification of morphological and dimensional characteristics, mainly if the proposed based alloys are used in dental applications [23].…”

“…Additionally, porosity induces non-uniform stress distribution in SMCs, thereby decreasing the load-bearing area. This increases iron loss due to plastic deformation during compression molding [15][16][17][18][19][20].…”

“…The granulometry of the powders [19,20] and the number of pores [21] in the final component are critical parameters in the SMC mixes. As for the latter, it is well known [22][23][24] that pores act as crack initiators.…”
