Porcine Hemagglutinating Encephalomyelitis Virus: A Review

Abstract: The porcine hemagglutinating encephalomyelitis virus (PHEV) is classified as a member of genus Betacoronavirus , family Coronaviridae , sub-family Cornavirinae , and order Nidovirales . PHEV shares the same genomic organization, replication strategy, and expression of viral proteins as other nidoviruses. PHEV produces vomiting and wasting disease (VWD) and/or encephalomyelitis, being the only known neurotropic coronavir… Show more

“…Moreover, swine acute diarrhea syndrome coronavirus (SADS-CoV), first reported in 2017, together with porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) and transmissible gastroenteritis virus (TGEV) are alphacoronaviruses that cause highly lethal enteric disease in pigs (53). Porcine deltacoronavirus (PDCoV) and the betacoronavirus porcine hemagglutinating encephalomyelitis virus (PHEV) also use pigs as hosts (54,55).…”

“…nervous system resulting in neurological diseases 19 . Other coronaviruses have been shown to be neurotropic, causing encephalitis in felines 20 , porcine 21 and murine 22 . Additionally, SARS-CoV-1, the most closely related coronavirus, has been shown to infect the brain stem of both human and animals 23 and the first case of meningitis/encephalitis has been reported in a patient associated with SARS-CoV-2 24 .…”
