Show more

“…The monuments were actively used by both sides in the conflict of the urban space, and it became manifest that such monuments no longer represent contemporary society in Temuco. Following the analysis made by Márquez (2020b), we see that these actions of reappropriation, denial, and recreation of public spaces allow completing the ways that cities acquire and include or exclude subaltern narratives, which, in the Mapuche case, involve an attempt to challenge the colonial logic of urban spaces. We can also draw parallels with the events that took place after the murder of George Floyd by the police in Minnesota, USA, where similar actions occurred with many sites and monuments dedicated to colonial domination and slavery, further revealing the contested nature of heritage.…”

“…One of the first calls to register the material culture of the events in the social outburst taking place in Chile were raised from the archaeological community in Santiago. Several archaeologists (and anthropologists) took to the streets to record the events (see, Márquez, 2020a, 2020b; Márquez et al, 2020a, 2020b). Several different groups started to register the material remains in the streets with traditional archaeological methods during the first days of the curfew, and several ethnographers initiated interviews and fieldwork with different social movements.…”

“…Organized protest activity spread rapidly at the metropolitan scale (Lin, 2019), including at the local level (Del Romero & Puig, 2021). However, the various analyses of the use and appropriation of urban space have focused on the center of the capital and of Chile's other major cities (Araujo et al, 2020;Márquez, 2020), while the events that occurred in disadvantaged and peripheral areas have been overlooked.…”
