Populations Collapses in Marine Invertebrates Due to Endocrine Disruption: A Cause for Concern?

Abstract: In the beginning of the twenty first century, the International Program on Chemical Safety published a document entitled Global Assessment of the State-Of-The-Science of Endocrine Disruptors. The work indicated only weak evidence of endocrine-related effects in human populations, and in wild animal populations. This document was revised in 2012 (State of the Science of Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals−2012) (1). The new document and the extensive scientific evidence it provided showed clearly that ED effects cou… Show more

“…In the last 2 decades, the concept of endocrine disruptor chemicals (EDCs) has become a subject of debate and concern among scientists, physicians, regulatory authorities, and the public (Fernandez 2019; Celic et al 2020; Gonsioroski et al 2020; Muller et al 2020). The study of the effects of EDCs on human health is a difficult and complex issue.…”

“…Another argument indicating the need for further research in the field is the great diversity of the world of invertebrates, and as Castro and Santos stated in their publication, the fact that estrogens have a specific effect on one invertebrate species does not mean that they will have the same effect on all other species [20]. A common conclusion resulting from the majority of publications dealing with this subject is the indication of the further need for research in this direction [19,20,30,31].…”

“…Keanekaragaman hayati dapat diukur pada berbagai tingkat biologis, dari keanekaragaman genetik dalam suatu spesies hingga ke berbagai ekosistem di bumi (Br & Padmaja, 2016). Sekitar 95% hewan dibumi merupakan jenis invertebrata (Fernandez, 2019;Kundariati et al, 2020;Lutfi et al, 2017;Shiffert, 2020;S. A. Smith, 2011).…”
