Population Studies of Phytophagous Mites and Predators on Apple in Southwestern Quebec

Abstract: Can. Ent. 99: 771-778 (1967) Ecological studies, undertaken to determine the fluctuations of phytophagous mites and predators in apple orchards, were conducted in 1955, 1956, and 1957 at Rougemont, Que., in two plots sprayed only with fungicides for the control of apple scab, Venturia inaeqmlis (Cke) Wint., and in a third one sprayed, in addition to fungicides, with all insecticides needed for the control of destructive insects. “…The species structure and relative abundance of spiders found in the current study are different from that of eastern North American apple orchards (LeRoux 1960, Parent 1967, Dondale et al 1979, McCaffrey and Horsburgh 1980. The most abundant genera in the current study were Metaphidippus, Spirembolus, and Cheiracanthium (which represent Ϸ50% of total spider species) as compared with Theridion, Araniella, and Philodromus found on apple orchards in the east- Insecticides were applied on 13 May, 3 June, 20 July, and 11 August.…”

“…As the sdectivitv of chemicals becomes better known, the destruction of certain species of predators may be avoided. Parent (1967) has reviewed the work on the influence of chemicals on p h p p h a g o u s mites and predators of pome fruit trees. This has been on the short-and long-term post-treatment effects of pesticides on different species in existing environments.…”
