BackgroundMelastoma malabathricum L. (Melastomaceae) is a small shrub with various medicinal uses. The present study was carried out to determine the hepatoprotective activity of methanol extract of M. malabathricum leaves (MEMM) against the paracetamol-induced liver toxicity in rats model.MethodsThe respective chemicals and herbal solutions (10% DMSO, 200 mg/kg silymarin or MEMM (50, 250 and 500 mg/kg)) were administered orally to rats once everyday for 7 days followed by the hepatotoxicity assay. The blood samples and livers were collected and subjected to biochemical and microscopical analysis. Prior to the hepatoprotective study, MEMM was subjected to determination of the total phenolic content (TPC) and the antioxidant properties using several standard assays (e.g. 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl- and superoxide anion- radical scavenging assay, and oxygen radical absorbance capacity assay).ResultsMEMM exerted significant (p < 0.05) and high antioxidant activity in which high TPC was recorded; while in the hepatotoxicity study, the extract exhibited significant hepatoprotective effects against the paracetamol-induced hepatotoxic model. The results observed for serum liver enzymes (ALT, ALP and AST) as well as the microscopic observations and microscopic scoring supported the hepatoprotective potential of MEMM. The phytochemical and HPLC analysis of MEMM demonstrated the presence of flavonoids as its major constituents.ConclusionsThe MEMM-induced hepatoprotective activity could be allied partly to its antioxidant activity and the presence of flavonoids.

Hemiparasitic Cassytha filiformis commonly infects native host (Dillenia suffruticosa and Melastoma malabathricum) and introduced host (Acacia auriculiformis and Acacia mangium) species in threatened heath forests in Brunei. This study aims to investigate the impact of parasitism on the ecophysiology of these host species. This study addresses the research gap in understanding the ecophysiology of C. filiformis–host associations, particularly when native and introduced hosts were infected. We generated CO2 and light response curves to examine the effects of increasing CO2 and light levels of infected and uninfected hosts and examined gaseous exchange, mineral nutrients, and secondary bioactive compounds of host–parasite associations. Infected hosts were negatively impacted by C. filiformis as exhibited in the CO2 and light response curves, with C. filiformis–native host association performing better than introduced species. There were no significant differences in photosynthetic parameters between infected and uninfected hosts, except in D. suffruticosa. Certain nutrient contents showed significant differences, but total N, Ca, and K in uninfected hosts were similar to infected hosts. Total phenols and tannins were significantly higher in introduced hosts than native hosts. Our findings asserted that this hemiparasitic vine relies on both its photosynthetic efficiency and nutrient acquisition from its hosts. The parasitism did not significantly hinder the ecophysiological performance of infected hosts, suggesting a plausible co‐existence between the hosts and C. filiformis. This study provides essential ecophysiological information for future research on how C. filiformis can establish itself without negatively impacting the co‐habitating native hosts.

Mud crab are one of the fisheries commodities that have important economic value. Today the demand for mud crab on the market is increasing, so that the capture of mud crab is also increasing. To overcome this, various efforts have been made to meet market demand, namely by conducting seeding, fattening and enlargement of mud crab in the pond. This study aims to determine the maturity level of mud crab ovaries (Scylla sp.) by administering a combination of karamunting (M. malabathricum) leaf extract and thyroxine hormone. This study used a complete randomized design with 4 treatments and 3 replications. The treatments in this study were treatment A (control), treatment B (M. Malabathricum 0.25 mg/g and thyroxine hormone 0.1 µg/g), treatment C (M. Malabathricum 0.5 mg/g and thyroxine hormone 0.1 µg/g), treatment D (M. Malabathricum 1 mg/g and thyroxine hormone 0.1 µg/g). The results showed that the administration of a combination of karamunting leaf extract (M. malabathricum) and the thyroxine hormone in treatments B and C can accelerate the process of egg removal (berried), which is within 20 days. The combination of karamunting leaf extract (M. malabathricum) and the thyroxine hormone can accelerate the ripening ovaries of mud crab from control treatment.
