Population‐Based Age‐ and Sex‐Specific Incidence Rates in the 4 Main Types of Leukaemia

Abstract: Due to recent developments in clinical haematology, 98.8 % of all 1980 cases of leukaemia reported to the Danish Cancer Registry during the 4-year period 1973-76 could be subclassified into the 4 main types of leukaemia. Thus, it has been possible to characterize each of these types more accurately than before regarding age-and sex-specific incidence rates, relative frequency, male/female ratio, and median age at diagnosis. Chronic lymphatic leukaemia constituted 38 '90 and chronic myeloid leukaemia 15 '90 of … Show more

“…Similar fi ndings have been reported by many authors like Roda L et al [20], Pradhan P et al [8], Rani S et al [11], Kasthuri S et al [21], Kushwaha et al [14], and D'costa G et al [19]. A markedly high incidence of CLL has been given by Kwiat Kowski A [6], Hansen NE et al [10] and Brincker H [22] who reported CLL as being more common than CML in Poland, Denmark and Scandinavia respectively. We found maximum cases of ALL upto 4 years of age as has also been reported by Van Steensel Moll NA et al [16], Clavel J et al [23] and Monge P et al [17].…”

“…CML occurs in 7% to 15% of all leukemias in adults with approximately 1 to 1.5 cases per 100,000 population [4,5]. Asymptomatic cases of CML have increased from 15% to about 40% of all cases.A European study published in 2007 estimates the CML incidence to be 1-2 cases per 100,000 people every year [6].The activity of leukocyte alkaline phosphatase is reduced in nearly all patients at diagnosis [7].According to Medscape total WBC count 20,000-60,000 cells/μL in CML with mildly increased basophils and eosinophils while in our patient it was 175,000/uL.…”

“…The median age of our population was 67, and more than 60% of the cases were older than 60. The issue of how to treat these subjects remains a concern 7,17,24 . Even though a definitive cure after 60 is a rare event, some patients can achieve a CR, sometimes durable, with potential positive impact on quality of life 25,26 .…”
