Popular Culture Forms: Soap Operas

Abstract: This entry begins with a discussion of the scope and impact of serial narratives on the development of national television broadcast systems worldwide, then shifts to specific focus on US daytime soap operas. Soaps engage numerous sociological issues, including social identity, sociality/community, and cultural legitimation, and study of the genre is ongoing in multiple social‐scientific and humanities‐oriented disciplines.
