Pooled analysis of 1270 infective endocarditis cases in Turkey

Abstract: Introduction: Despite developments in medicine, infective endocarditis (IE) is still associated with significant morbidity and mortality. In this study it was aimed to systematically review the infective endocarditis literature published or presented from Turkey. Methods: To find the published series, one national database (Ulakbim), and three international databases (Scopus, Pubmed and Sci-e) were searched between 31 October-3 November 2014. also, abstracts of congresses by three national congresses wer… Show more

“…Four-fifths, as the significant portion, of patients had left-sided IE affecting aortic and mitral valves with similar rates. Although relatively infrequent [13], we detected multivalvular involvement in one-tenth of our cases. Basically, size matters in endocarditis and bigger vegetations, over 10 mm in particular, boost embolic risks [14].…”

“…In this review, IE mainly affected left-sided valves, which is in line with the findings from other authors worldwide (Habib et al, 2019;Muñoz et al, 2015;Selton-Suty et al, 2012). As expected and consistent with the description of other studies (Habib et al, 2019;Nakatani et al, 2013;Vahabi et al, 2019), vegetations were the most reported and found echocardiographic finding. Other common findings in our review were valvular regurgitation and abscesses.…”

“…On the other hand, RHD information was provided in less than half of the studies (2005 cases). When comparing the presence of RHD in our study to that from other regions, a similar rate of RHD among subjects with IE have been described in Turkey (11%) (Vahabi et al, 2019), but a lower frequency has been reported in higher-income countries like Spain (8%) (Muñoz et al, 2015). This reflects how RHD continues to be a cause of morbidity in developing nations compared to wealthier regions.…”

“…Ülkemizden, Vahabi ve ark. 1270 endokardit olgusunu kapsayan meta analizlerinde Staphylococcus aureus, koagülaz negatif stafilokoklar ve enterokoklar olguların %22.8'ini, %9.7'sini ve %7.5'ini oluştururken, %31.1 olguda kültür negatif bulunmuş ve total mortalite %23.4 olarak bildirilmiştir (14) . EE tanısında klinik, laboratuvar ve görüntüleme yöntemlerini içeren değiştirilmiş Duke Kriterleri uzun süredir kullanılmaktadır.…”
