The reversible shrink–swell behavior of expansive soil imposes a serious challenge that threatens the overlying structures’ safety and durability. Traditional chemical additives such as lime and cement still exhibit satisfying performance over their counterparts in terms of swelling potential reduction. Nevertheless, significant concerns are associated with these chemicals, in addition to their environmental impact. This paper proposes a novel application of the closed-cell one-component hydrophobic polyurethane foam (HPUF) to stabilize the swelling soil. An extensive experimental study was performed to assess the efficiency of HPUF in mitigating both the swelling and shrinkage response of high montmorillonite content expansive soil. Expansive soil was injected/mixed with different weight ratios of the proposed stabilizer, and the optimum mixing design and injection percentage of the foam resin were identified to be ranged from 10% to 15%. The shrink–swell behaviors of both injected and noninjected samples were compared. Results of this comparison confirmed that HPUF could competently reduce both the swelling potential and the shrinkage cracking of the reactive expansive soil, even after several wet-shrink cycles.

In construction projects, determining the type and properties of materials is a significant aspect. Not all soil has the potential to support the structure above it. If the building is constructed on weak ground, it is at risk and susceptible to collapsing due to differential caused by the soil's poor shear strength and high compressibility. Therefore, changing soil properties to increase its engineering performance is highly required. In this research, experiments were carried out to improve the strength of sand utilizing polyurethane-resin (P.U.) as additive material conducted in this research. This research aims to investigate the effects of adding polyurethane-resin for soil shear strength, settlement, deformation modulus, and unconfined compressive strength. In this study, three types of sand were injected with Polyurethane. A plate loading test was conducted before and after polyurethane injection. The settlement, ultimate bearing capacity, and deformation modulus were determined based on the results of the plate loading test. Cylindrical samples were extracted from the injected sand mass, tested by the unconfined compressive strength test, and determined deformation modulus. For assessing the effect of polyurethane mixing ratio on shear strength parameters and unconfined compressive strength, samples with different polyurethane mixing ratios 0.5, 1, 2, and 4% by weight were prepared and tested utilizing the unconfined compressive strength and direct shear box.

In this work, ceramic waste (CW), lime, and cement were used for the road sub-base layer. This new approach can eliminate the hazards related to inadvisable industrial waste disposal. To this end, various amounts of CW and hydraulic binder ranged from 5% to 15% and 2 to 6%, respectively. The addition of 5, 10, and 15% CW to the soil improves the physical and mechanical parameters of the soil. However, adding 2% to 6% lime to the mixes has a positive influence on connecting the soil particles. Moreover, the addition of CW waste and lime to the soil gave sufficient results in bearing capacity for both soaked and unsoked, which increased about 114% when we used 15% CW with 6% lime and 200% when we used 15% CW with 2% lime and 2% OPC. In terms of resistance, the results also showed that the unconfined compressive strength (UCS) increased 13 times in soaked conditions and 77% in wet conditions. The addition of CW and hydraulic binder offers an enhanced solution for the stabilization of the sub-base layer as it allows for an increase in bearing capacity. Finally, the addition of CW and hydraulic binder can be used as stabilizers to correct the lower bearing capacity and unconfined compressive strength of the sub-base layer.
