Polyurethane-Based Coatings with Promising Antibacterial Properties

Abstract: In coatings technology, the possibility of introducing specific characteristics at the surface level allows for the manufacture of medical devices with efficient and prolonged antibacterial properties. This efficiency is often achieved by the use of a small amount of antibacterial molecules, which can fulfil their duty while limiting eventual releasing problems. The object of this work was the preparation and characterization of silver, titanium dioxide and chitosan polyurethane-based coatings. Coatings with t… Show more

“…Conventional approaches to obtain antimicrobial polymers based on silver or other metals are based on either the deposition of a metallic layer on a polymer surface [ 45 ] or entrapping metal nanoparticles [ 46 ]. In contrast, in this study, the coordination of polymers was obtained by simply dipping the synthesized PU ionomers sodium salts in an aqueous solution containing either silver or zinc salts.…”

“…This includes the specific functionalization of the AgNPs or custom construction of TPU matrices blending with other polymers or molecules possessing functional groups that enhance interaction with the AgNPs. Additionally, methods such as the direct reduction of silver salts within the polymer matrix are employed, among other approaches [ 43 , 44 , 45 , 46 ].…”
