Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids in Relation to Sperm Motility

Abstract: IntroductionRecent studies performed in our laboratory (Nissen et al. -1981) showed that the percentage composition of phospholipid-bound docosahexaenoic acid of human semen was distinctly lower in azoospermia and oligozoospermia than in astheno-or teratozoospermia. The fatty acid composition is important to provide the correct membrane fluidity and permeability (Chapman and Wallach -1968;Veerkamp et al. -1962). Therefore we continued our studies on a different and larger population and expanded it to include … Show more

“…Thus, lipids are basic components of semen, contributing to the membrane structure of spermatozoa, the metabolism of the sperm cells and to their ability to capacitate and fertilize the female gamete (Mann and LutwakMann, 1981). Functional roles of the lipids in the overall fertility and motility (Nissen et al, 1981;Nissen and Kreysel, 1983) may be related to their general effects on the biophysical properties of the membranes, such as fluidity and permeability (Hammerstedt, 1993).…”

“…This characteristic is necessary for capacitation, acrosome reaction, and motility of sperm in human (Nissen et al 1983), boar (Cerolini et al 2000), and chicken (Cerolini et al 2003) sperm.…”

“…Em muitas espécies de mamíferos, mais de 60% dos ácidos graxos da membrana espermática são ácidos graxos poliinsaturados (PUFA) de cadeia longa da serie ômega 3 (ω3) (Poulos et al, 1973;Nissen & Kreysel, 1983). Esta específica composição de lipídios confere uma maior fluidez à membrana plasmática devido à presença de algumas ligações duplas (Erickson, 1998).…”
