Polythiosemicarbazides. II. Effect of chemical structure on chelating properties. Structure of the chelates

Abstract: Polythiosemicarbazides react with acqueous Cu+2 solutions with formation of polymeric chelates, for which the following structure is typical: The adsorption of Cu2+ by the polymer proceeds selectively and in preference to Fe3+, Zn2+, W6+, Al3+, Be2+, Cr3+, UO22+, Ni2+, V5+, Mo6+, Hf4+, Zr4+, Ta5+, Nb5+. Separations of these metals from Cu2+ are therefore possible.

“…Both of these polymers can form strong complexes with several transition metal ions through the sulfur-containing groups in their backbones (thiosemicarbazide and thiourea groups, respectively). “…1. Campbell and Tomic first synthesized poly-thiosemicarbazide in 1962, in their work they demonstrated that this polymer forms chemical complexes with iron, nickel, silver, copper, mercury and lead [32,33]. Further tests from our group demonstrated its ability to form strong complexes with gold ions, even at extreme acidic conditions.…”

“…The use of hydrazine as extender in the manufacture of Spandex fibers is discussed under polyurethanes. Reaction of MDI with isophthalic dihydrazides 17 in DMSO affords poly(semicarbazides) 18 (78). Dioximes and diisocyanates react in a similar manner to give polyaddition products (79).…”
