Polystyrene/Recycled Sbr Powder Compounds Produced in An Internal Batch Mixer

Abstract: The properties of recycled styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) powder with polystyrene (PS) have been studied as a function of compounding conditions in an internal batch mixer. In particular, the effect of temperature (160-220°C), rotor speed (30-120 rpm), homogenization time (3-9 min), components introduction order, surface treatment of SBR powder with a PS/tetrahydrofuran (THF) solution, and addition of a coupling agent (styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene, SEBS) were studied. The compounds were then compression m… Show more

“…Polymer swelling is defined as a volume increase of the gel fraction by a liquid or a gas [91]. Macsiniuc et al [92] proposed a pre-treatment of rubber particles in a solvent to improve the compatibility between rubber and plastic for TPE preparation. This method is based on swelling the rubber chains by a solvent, improving the penetration of the dissolved thermoplastic matrix molecules into the crosslinked rubber network.…”

“…This method is based on swelling the rubber chains by a solvent, improving the penetration of the dissolved thermoplastic matrix molecules into the crosslinked rubber network. Macsiniuc et al [92] studied the swelling behavior of SBR particles and the penetration of matrix molecules in the crosslinked rubber structure. They reported increased Young's modulus (468 to 652 MPa), tensile strength (5.14 to 9.39 MPa), and impact strength (35.2 to 50.1 J/m).…”

“…Macsiniuc et al [18] investigated mechanical properties and morphology of PS/SBRr blends compatibilized with styrene (ethylene butylene) styrene (SEBS). PS/SBRr blends presented rubber particles distribution relatively well disperded in PS matrix, heading to impact strength improvement.…”

“…[18] The use of rubber waste in mixtures with polystyrene has been studied with the objective of reusing them and producing materials with adequate properties. [19][20][21][22][23] However, due to structural and viscosity differences, the simple mixing between the materials does not produce a new one with properties synergism. [24][25][26] To solve this problem, in general, a compatibilizer is used to act on the interface of the constituents of the mixture, promoting adhesion, reduction of interfacial tension and improving the dispersion.…”
