Polypyrrole-Grafted Coconut Shell Biological Carbon as a Potential Adsorbent for Methyl Tert-Butyl Ether Removal: Characterization and Adsorption Capability

Abstract: Methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) has been used as a common gasoline additive worldwide since the late twentieth century, and it has become the most frequently detected groundwater pollutant in many countries. This study aimed to synthesize a novel microbial carrier to improve its adsorptive capacity for MTBE and biofilm formation, compared to the traditional granular activated carbon (GAC). A polypyrrole (PPy)-modified GAC composite (PPy/GAC) was synthesized, and characterized by Fourier transform infrared spect… Show more

“…Generally, when 1/ n is less than 0.5, the adsorption process would be easily carried out. Adsorption process is difficult when the 1/ n is larger than 0.5 [ 4 , 5 ]. In this research, the 1/ n is less than 0.5 when MB was adsorbed onto tea waste, suggesting that adsorption behavior of methylene blue on tea waste easily performed.…”

“…The Temkin isotherm model assumes that the heat of adsorption of all the molecules in the layer decreases linearly with coverage due to adsorbent–adsorbate interactions and mainly describes the chemisoprtion process which dominated through electrostatic adsorption [ 4 , 5 ]. In this investigation, the correlation coefficient of Temkin model was larger than 0.95, revealing that electrostatic interaction was an important mechanism between tea waste and methylene blue.…”

“…After applying the exclusion criteria, identifying duplicates and articles dealing with bioremediation, 11 documents remained, of which only five addressed investigations involving pseudomonad biofilms in the process. Pseudomonas aeruginosa was cited in only three of them, as an axenic culture (PATHAK et al, 2017) or mixed with consortia (LI et al, 2017;Al-MAILEM et al, 2014). The other two works identified Pseudomonas ssp.…”

“…[30] N-abundant biomass essentially solves the problem of the source of heteroatom N in the doping effect, and it is more economical and environmentally friendly than the method of doping N-containing molecules (melamine, pyrrole) in the carbonization process. [31] In this paper, hierarchical porous carbon with nitrogen and oxygen co-doping was prepared from lotus root knots as biomass raw material and made into electrodes for super capacitors by simple carbonization and continuous activation, making full use of its own advantages. As biomass itself is also a food residue, it has low price and renewable property beneficial to environmental resources.…”
