Polyphenols: Potential source of drugs for the treatment of ischaemic heart disease

Abstract: Polyphenols, which are naturally present in plants, have been studied for their chemical and pharmacological properties. Polyphenols have been found to exhibit various bioactivities such as antioxidant, free radical scavenging and anti-inflammatory effects, in addition to regulating the intracellular free calcium levels. These bioactivities are related to the underlying mechanisms of ischaemic heart diseases. Pharmacological studies have proven polyphenols to be effective in treating cardiovascular diseases in… Show more

“…Polyphenols have been famous for its various bioactivities such as antioxidant and anti-inflammation functions, free radical scavenging effect and regulating intracellular calcium function [9]. Myricetin (M), a polyphenol monomer, is commonly distributed in berries, vegetables, tea, and wine produced from various plants [10].…”

“…Epidemiological studies suggest that a polyphenol rich diet may provide protection against coronary heart disease [1,8,14] and lung cancer [15]. Dietary flavonoid intake (such as quercetine, kaempherol and myricetine) proved to decrease the incidence of advanced stage prostate cancer [12].…”
