Polyphenols from red wine are potent modulators of innate and adaptive immune responsiveness

Abstract: It is well known that the consumption of dietary polyphenols leads to beneficial effects for human health as in the case of prevention and/or attenuation of cardiovascular, inflammatory, neurodegenerative and neoplastic diseases. This review summarizes the role of polyphenols from red wine in the immune function. In particular, using healthy human peripheral blood mononuclear cells, we have demonstrated the in vitro ability of Negroamaro, an Italian red wine, to induce the release of nitric oxide and both pro-… Show more

“…Over the past years, plant-derived polyphenols have been experimented in in vitro and in vivo models of intestinal inflammation in view of their anti-inflammatory potential (134, 135). Interesting results have been obtained in vitro treating Caco-2 cells with cocoa polyphenols (134).…”

“…High concentrations of flavonoids are found frequently as nonessential and healthy plant metabolites in foodstuffs and have attracted interest as natural inhibitors of inflammation (28,50,78). A frequently occurring flavonoid is quercetin, which is readily absorbed in the duodenum and then coupled to uronic acid before its transport in plasma (98).…”

“…Moreover, in vitro studies reviewed in [13,14] have shown that polyphenols inhibit the expression and secretion of pro-inflammatory molecules in several cell lines. This inhibitory action has been shown to be coupled to the enhancement of IL-10 production, thus maintaining the inflammatory:anti-inflammatory ratio [13,14].…”
