Polyphenols as natural antioxidants in cosmetics applications

Abstract: Reactive oxygen species take part in several degenerative processes to the organism. 1 Epidemiological and experimental studies have provided an effective evidence of a critical association between free radicals and the development of early aging. 2,3 Some applied antioxidants are able to block the harmful effects of free radicals as a prophylactic measure, resulting in normal production of structural proteins of the skin. 1,4 Polyphenolic compounds are substances widely distributed in nature, related to the p… Show more

“…Oxidative stress is strongly associated with skin aging because of the progressive accumulation of ROS in skin, as age increases [103]. Natural antioxidants are used in the production of pharmaceutical or cosmetic formulations with the aim of delaying the skin aging process and ameliorating skin aesthetics [104]. Gnetum gnemon (melinjo) is an arboreal dioecious plant extensively cultivated in South Asia.…”

“…The use of natural polyphenols in cosmetics is justified and worthwhile due to their capability to ameliorate cutaneous issues and applicability for antiaging purposes in cosmetics, as well as for nutraceutical applications. Natural polyphenols possess the potential to prevent premature ageing, decrease the occurrence of skin cancer, attenuate photoaging and protect skin against ultraviolet radiation [ 9 ]. Furthermore they have properties of depigmenting, impairing inflammation, healing wounds and mitigating skin irritation [ 7 ].…”
