“…Most polyphenols have strong antioxidant properties, which can effectively scavenge excess ROS induced by metal ions and maintain the homeostasis of the local microenvironmental. [86,87] Polyphenols can also synergize with metal ions to enhance the antibacterial activity. [71]…”

“…During the inflammatory phase, immune cells secrete pro-inflammatory cytokines, inducing the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), such as hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ), hydroxyl radical (OH·) and superoxide anion radical (O 2 ˙ − ), by resident inflammatory cells [ [4] , [5] , [6] ]. Excessive accumulation of ROS in infected wounds can overwhelm the native antioxidant defense system, strengthen the inflammatory reaction, and thus delay wound healing [ 7 , 8 ] and cause scar formation [ [9] , [10] , [11] , [12] ], resulting in skin dysfunction and adverse cosmetic appearance [ 13 ]. ROS-scavenging biomaterials including polyphenols [ 14 , 15 ], nanozymes [ 16 , 17 ], and others, exhibit enhanced therapeutic effects via augmentation of malfunctioning or depleted native antioxidant mechanisms, indicating their utility in the resolution of delayed wound closure and scarless wound healing.…”

“…Polyphenols have good antioxidant ability through multiple mechanisms, such as scavenging free radicals [ 46 ], activating detoxifying/defensive proteins [ 47 ], etc. PC has been reported as an activator to antioxidative enzymes and the glutathione cycle [ 48 ], especially after chelation with metal ions under suitable conditions [ 30 , 49 ], therefore, a PC-MPN coating was chosen to further investigate the antioxidant properties of the cell response. To simulate an overstressed ROS environment [ 50 , 51 ], 10 mM H 2 O 2 was added to the culture medium as an ROS provider.…”
