The change in the properties of low-density polyethylene after adding starch, oxo-material, polylactic acid, and their mixture was studied. Different amounts of the additives were added, and films were prepared by using a twin-screw extruder at 150-225 C. By Minitab software, the optimum percentages of the additives were selected. The films were kept under different environmentalconditions including "open atmosphere," "buried underground," and "buried underground with regular daily irrigation" for 6 months. The degradability, tensile strength, elongation at breaking point, and dart impact were measured. Thermogravimetric analysis and FTIR spectrum changes were used to monitor changes. SEM images illustrated that the starch changed the morphology significantly, while other additives did not show remarkable effects. Mechanical and chemical properties changed significantly when starch was added. The highest changes were recorded for the sample with three additives, which was showing the high efficiency of the film decomposition. The highest amount of chemical changes was recorded for the same film. After 6 months, the lowest crystallinity was recorded by DSC and XRD for the same sample. Different environmental conditions showed different effects on the films mechanical properties. However, chemical properties of the films, excluding the film with starch, did not change significantly.

Na rynku tworzyw sztucznych pojawia się coraz więcej tworzyw opisywanych jako biodegradowalne, oxobiodegradowalne, które mają być całkowicie bezpieczne dla środowiska, mają rozkładać się znacznie szybciej niż konwencjonalne tworzywa, w warunkach naturalnych, np. kompostowania. Informacje podawane przez producentów takich materiałów budzą wiele wątpliwości i kontrowersji, związanych z rzeczywistym rozkładem tworzywa, jego bezpieczeństwem dla środowiska. Calem pracy było przedstawienie najważniejszych informacji, dotyczących tworzyw biodegradowalnych oraz oxobiodegradowalnych, wykorzystywanych jako opakowania na towary, żywność oraz worki na odpady, określenie możliwości rozkładu tych tworzyw oraz zidentyfikowanie problemów, jakie powstają na różnych etapach ich cyklu życia. Zebrane informacje potwierdzają konieczność modyfikacji przepisów i norm dotyczących tworzyw biodegradowalnych i oxobiodegradowalnych, w celu wyeliminowania z rynku produktów, które mogą stwarzać poważne zagrożenie dla środowiska oraz zdrowia i życia zwierząt. Głównym problemem jest rozkład tworzyw w różnych warunkach środowiskowych, które są inne niż ustalone podczas badań w laboratoriach.

The Semicrystalline Morphology of Polybutylene Succinate Supports a General Scheme Based on Intracrystalline Dynamics

Based on a limited set of model samples it has been recently shown that semicrystalline polymers exhibit different morphological characteristics depending on the existence and timescale of intracrystalline chain diffusion (ICD) relative to the kinetics of crystal growth. Here, the generality of these reports for the case of so-called crystal-fixed polymers without or very slow ICD is tested by providing a detailed nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and small-angle X-ray scattering analysis of polybutylene succinate (PBS), a biodegradable polyester. By using a combination of NMR techniques covering different timescales it is shown that there is no intracrystalline dynamics on a time scale faster than 1 s, that is, PBS is crystal-fixed. An expected crystallinity below 50% and the typical morphology consisting of lamellar crystals with a well-defined crystal thickness and a broad thickness distribution of the amorphous interlayers are confirmed. By combining these results with differential scanning calorimetry measurements, a more precise value could be provided for the enthalpy of melting than previously available. The mechanical properties at room temperature are furthermore influenced by additional insertion crystallization taking place during cooling, which leads to an increase of the mechanical modulus by a factor of ≈2.5 as compared to the state at the end of isothermal crystallization.
