Polyol mediated nano size zinc oxide and nanocomposites with poly(methyl methacrylate)

Abstract: Abstract. Organophilic nano ZnO particles have been synthesized in various diols (ethylene glycol -EG, 1,2 propane diol -PD, 1,4 butane diol -BD and tetra(ethylene glycol) -TEG) in the presence of p-toluenesulfonic acid, p-TsOH, as an end capping agent. The addition of p-TsOH reduces the ZnO particle size and increases its crystallite size. With increasing diol main chain length the ZnO particle size increases (EG (32 nm) < PD (33 nm) < BD (72 nm) < TEG (86 nm)). Using the assynthesized and unmodified ZnO nano… Show more

“…To evaluate the functional properties existing in ZnO/Al 2 O 3 /Cr 2 O 3 NPs, FTIR spectra was carried out as in Figure (b). As it is observed from Figure (b), there are two major peaks at 480 and 1130 cm −1 associated with metal‐oxygen (Zn−O/Cr−O/Al−O) and C−O bonds vibration ,. The Optical absorption (UV/vis) of ZnO/Al 2 O 3 /Cr 2 O 3 NPs was shown an intense and Sharp peak at 277 nm characteristic band for synthesized NPs as illustrated in Figure (c) ,.…”

“…In most of the cases, ZnO nanoparticles have been prepared by solgel, combustion, precipitation, hydrothermal, solvothermal, chemical vapor deposition (CVD), microemulsion precipitation and microwave assisted thermal oxidation (7)(8)(9)(10)(11)(12). ZnO nanoparticles have been synthesized with different morphologies such as nanoflower, nanobelt, corallike, tube like, nanonail, ellipsoidal, nanocolloids, nanopowders (13,14).…”

“…The composites based on different polymeric matrix and inorganic fillers are characterized with a good combination of optical, electrical, magnetic, and mechanical properties, and improved chemical and fire resistance . Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) is an amorphous thermoplastic polymer with the excellent optical properties, high strength and dimensional stability , and its choice is based on remarkable mechanical properties, biocompatibility and transparency . PMMA material can replace the inorganic glass in many practical applications, due to its good impact resistance performance, and favorable processing properties .…”

“…The addition of oxide nanoparticles to monomer enables the preparation of PMMA hybrid materials with a high potential for new technologically attractive application areas (sensors, optoelectronic devices, protecting, and antireflective coatings, transparent barrier/protective layers), and with the enhanced thermal stability . The chemical composition and molecular weight of PMMA, as well as the average particle size and type, are important factors influencing PMMA nanocomposite properties .…”
