Poly(itaconic acid) (PIA) have been synthesized by hydrolysis of poly(itaconic anhydride) and by polymerization of itaconic acid initiated by redox system. Conductometric, potentiometric and spectrophotometric titration of aqueous solutions of PIA have been carried out. The results are discussed in terms of a conformational transition. Apparent dissociation constant and conductance of PIA solutions have been investigated as functions of concentration. BADANIA POLI(KWASU ITAKONOWEGO) W ROZTWORACH WODNYCHStreszczenie -Przeprowadzono syntezy poli(kwasu itakonowego) poprzez hydrolizê poli(bezwodnika kwasu itakonowego) oraz na drodze polimeryzacji inicjowanej uk³adem redoks. Wykonano miareczkowania konduktometryczne, potencjometryczne i spektrofotometryczne roztworów wodnych otrzymanych polikwasów. Stwierdzono, ¿e badane polikwasy zawieraj¹ oko³o 66 % dostêpnych grup karboksylowych (rys. 1 i 7). Wysuniêto hipotezê o przemianie konformacyjnej, która powoduje niedostêpnooeae pozosta³ych grup karboksylowych. Wyznaczono zmiany potencja³u termodynamicznego zwi¹zanego z tak¹ przemian¹ ∆G = 5,4-5,9 kJ/eq (tabela 1, rys. 4 i 5). Badano przewodnictwo elektryczne roztworów polikwasów (rys. 8 i 9) i zaobserwowano liniow¹ zale¿nooeae odwrotnooeci przewodnictwa równowa¿nikowego od pierwiastka kwadratowego ze stê¿enia PIA. S³owa kluczowe: poli(kwas itakonowy), roztwory wodne, sta³a dysocjacji, przewodnictwo równo-wa¿nikowe, przemiana konformacyjna.

Expanded polytetrafluoroethylene, ePTFE, is an attractive material for use as the implant in facial reconstruction surgery because it is bioinert; however, its low surface energy does not facilitate a strong interfacial bond with bone and thus for some applications the surfaces need to be modified to enhance their bone-integration properties. The surface modification of ePTFE membranes with copolymers of acrylic acid (AA) and itaconic acid (IA) using in situ gamma radiation induced grafting has been studied. Solutions with AA mole fractions ranging from 0.4 to 1.0 have been investigated. Graft yields of 35-50% with water uptakes of greater than 300% were obtained using 3 mol L 21 aqueous solutions of the monomers and a total incident dose of 10 kGy. The grafts were characterized by Fourier transform infrared and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses and the compositional microstructure of the grafted copolymers was investigated. The water uptake by the grafted membranes displayed a complex dependence on polymer chemistry and topology.

N‐alkyl‐substituted itaconimides (RII) and N‐(alkyl‐substituted phenyl)itaconimides (RPhII) with various alkyl substituents were prepared and polymerized in the presence of a radical or anionic initiator to give high molecular weight polymers in high yields. The effects of the alkyl substituents on the polymerization reactivities were investigated. It has been revealed that RII and RPhII have the highest polymerization reactivity compared with other itaconic and citraconic derivatives including dialkyl itaconates and citraconimides. The structure and some properties of poly(RII) and poly(RPhII) were examined. These polymers were found to have excellent thermal stability, better than poly (dialkyl itaconate)s. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
