The molecular structure of diphenylmethyl methacrylate has been determined by means of X-ray diffraction. Crystals are monoclinic, space group C2/c, u = 29,177(2), b = 6,017(1). c = 16,110(1) A, B = %,840(S)o, and Z = 8. The structure was solved by the direct method and refined by the block-diagonal least-squares procedure to R = 0,071 (R, = 0,091) for 1 768 measured reflections. The molecule has an unliperiplunur conformation as to the C=C and C=O double bonds about the C(l)-C(2) bond and a synperiplunur conformation as to the C=O and C-0 bonds about C(l)-O(l). 0,091). The final atomic parameters appear in Tab. 1 *).All the computations were performed on an ACOS 700s computer at
Results and Discussion
Molecular structureThe molecular structure with the numbering scheme of atoms is depicted in Fig. 1 . Bond lengths and bond angles are listed in Tab. 2, and selected least-squares planes and dihedral angles in Tab. 3.Of the four possible structures of methyl methacrylate derivatives shown in Fig. 2, the present molecule has an antiperiplanar-synperiplanar (up, sp) structure. The conformation of the C(2)=C(3) and C(l)=O(2) double bonds about the C(l)-C(2) is antiperiplanar. This is consistent with the results of electron diffraction studies -' ) and the molecular polarizability measurement4) of methyl methacrylate.
