A rapid-setting, starch-based lignocellulosic adhesive is described which could be cured at ambient temperature to form a lm having a clear appearance and signi cant moisture resistance when tested under ambient conditions. Maltodextrins with a dextrose equivalent (DE) range of 5-25 were reacted as an intimate mixture in the dry state with N-methylolacrylamide (N-MAM) to give products containing the corresponding carbohydrate methyleneacrylamido ethers, which were characterized by NMR spectroscopy and electrospray mass spectrometry. The reaction products, comprising mixtures of maltodextrins and methyleneacrylamido ethers, were formulated in water for paper adhesive use and tested for performance. Paper strip peel tests showed a time to bre tear of 2 min, an initial time to paper tear of 5 min, and 10 min to full paper adhesion. The failure load was 2.4 kN, diminishing to 1 kN after a 24 h cold water soak.

A wrinkle-resistant cotton fabric was produced by photo-initiated, free-radical reaction with Nmethylolacrylamide monomer from aqueous solution to form a poly(N-methylolacrylamide) copolymer, followed by crosslinking reactions of the methylol groups of the copolymer with cellulose. The product had increased conditioned and wet wrinkle-recovery angles and retained breaking and tearing strengths and stiffness values in the ranges normally obtained for wrinkle-resistant cottons. The efficiency of the conversion of monomer to polymer was greater when the cotton-monomer solution was irradiated wet than when it was irradiated dry, and greater when irradiated with 254-and 300-nm ultraviolet light than when irradiated with 350-nm light. Catalysts used to initiate reaction of methylol groups were about equally effective whether they were included in the initial monomer solution or added to modified cotton fabric after copolymer formation.

Cotton cellulose that had been chemically modified by reaction with acryloyl and methacryloyl chloride (degree of substitution 0.08-0.50) and then padded with various solvents was exposed to uv light (λ max 3500 & A r i n g ; ) in an inert atmosphere. Photolyzed, modified cotton fabrics (print cloth) exhibited wrinkle recovery angles as high as 331° (wet) and 285° (conditioned), compared with values of 174° and 160°, respectively, for control fabrics. These increases in wrinkle recovery angles were dependent on the degree of substitution of the modified cotton cellulose, the solvent used in padding, the presence of monomer during irradiation, and irradiation time. The breaking strengths of the fabrics decreased during chemical modification; however, these properties were not further changed during photolysis.
