Polymerization and Condensation Reaction of N-Methylol Acrylamide within Cotton Fabric

Abstract: Problems on the polymerization and condensation reaction of N-methylolacrylamide within cotton fabrics in which K 2 S 2 O 8 , (NH 4 ) 2 S 2 O 8 , or H 2 O 2 was used as initiator and NH 4 Cl or (NH 4 ) 2 HPO 4 used as the acid condensation catalyst were investigated primarily from the standpoint of the crease resistance of the treated fahric. The results obtained are as follows. The pre-drying process can be neglected, as almost the same result could be obtained even in the case of direct curing procedure, in w… Show more

“…N-Methylolacrylamide (NMA) monomer has been used as a crosslinking reagent for cellulose. In several treatment schemes, reaction of the methylol group with cellulose is effected, and subsequently the acryloyl group is reacted by a basecatalyzed nucleophilic reaction or by a free-radicalinitiated reaction with cellulose [4,7,8,10,11,15,16,18,31,32,36,37]. The sequence of these reaction may be reversed.…”

“…A combination of these processes has been reported in which N-methylolacrylamide was used as the crosslinking reagent [4,11,12]. Bertoniere et al [1,2] reported that when cotton cinnamate fabric (degree of substitution 0.3-0.6) was exposed to uv light (about 2537 A), the wrinkle recovery angle of the fabric increased over that of unphotolyzed fabric.…”
