Polymeric composite devices for localized treatment of early-stage breast cancer

Abstract: For early-stage breast cancers mastectomy is an aggressive form of treatment. Therefore, there is a need for new treatment strategies that can enhance the use of lumpectomy by eliminating residual cancer cells with limited side effects to reduce local recurrence. Although, various radiotherapy-based methods have been developed, residual cells are found in 20–55% of the time at the first operation. Furthermore, some current treatment methods result in poor cosmesis. For the last decade, the authors have been ex… Show more

“…The health burden of breast cancer is serious, with over 1 million female being diagnosed every year, and more than 410 000 people dying of it, representing 14.0% of female cancer deaths . Mastectomy is a positive treatment for small breast cancers; and the combination of lumpectomy and successive adjuvant whole breast radiotherapy that contributes to killing residual breast cancer cells has become a standard treatment . In breast cancer‐related mortalities, over 90% are reported to attribute not only to the primary tumor, but also to its distant metastases, and about 30% with early‐stage breast cancer have a metastatic or recurrent disease .…”

“…2 Mastectomy is a positive treatment for small breast cancers; and the combination of lumpectomy and successive adjuvant whole breast radiotherapy that contributes to killing residual breast cancer cells has become a standard treatment. 3 In breast cancer-related mortalities, over 90% are reported to attribute not only to the primary tumor, but also to its distant metastases, and about 30% with earlystage breast cancer have a metastatic or recurrent disease. 4 It is therefore of great significance to understand the mechanism of breast cancer metastasis in early diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer.…”

“…In contrast, implantable biomedical devices have been shown to have the potential to deliver cancer drugs to specific tumor sites 3 . Such devices, which can be inserted during tumor removal/surgery, can be designed to release cancer drugs to specific tumor sites or remaining cancer cells/tissue that surround the device 6,10,13 . However, there is a need to understand the drug release kinetics associated with implantable devices for the controlled release of cancer drugs 5,6,14 .…”
