Polymer‐Supported Ionic‐Liquid‐Like Phases (SILLPs): Transferring Ionic Liquid Properties to Polymeric Matrices

Abstract: The physico‐chemical properties of polymers with ionic‐liquid‐like moieties covalently bound to their surfaces (SILLPs) have been studied by thermal and spectroscopic techniques, as well as by direct impedance and dielectric measurements, and compared to those of the corresponding bulk ionic liquids. The effective transfer of properties from ionic liquids in solution to the supported species has thereby been demonstrated. The effects of the chemical nature of these tunable “solid solvents” on their macroscopic… Show more

“…From these ET (30) and ET(N) values, it can be deduced that there is a big change in polarity between the starting Merrifield resin, with a value of 0.292, and the supported polymers with values between 0.6 and 0.7. [75] The values obtained for ET(N) for these supported ILs are in good agreement with those reported for related bulk ILs (butyl imidazolium salts: BMIM).…”

“…The activity of the immobilized enzyme remained practically unaltered after seven cycles lasting 5 h each, better than using other immobilized preparations of the same enzyme. These biocatalysts were more deeply characterized later, as well as the effect of the microwave heating [78].…”

“…As we will see below, we have been able to demonstrate that many of those properties are efficiently transferred to the polymer. 15 Moreover, we have checked that modifications on the structural parameters of the IL-like fragments provide a method to modulate the properties of the resulting material. This is an essential factor as much as some of the most important applications of ILs rely on their potential as "designer solvents" being able to provide the desired properties, almost in an unlimited way, through the proper modular modification of their structural parameters.…”
