Polymer Shelled Microparticles for a Targeted Doxorubicin Delivery in Cancer Therapy

Abstract: Targeting is a main feature supporting any controlled drug delivery modality. Recently we developed poly(vinyl alcohol), PVA, based microbubbles as a potential new ultrasound contrast agent featuring an efficient ultrasound backscattering and a good shelf stability. The chemical versatility of the polymeric surface of this device offers a vast variety of coupling modalities useful for coating and specific targeting. We have designed a conjugation strategy on PVA shelled microbubbles to enable the localization … Show more

“…HA in 3D scaffolds induces the growth of spherical tumoroids during the proliferative steps . We observed that HA is a determining factor for internalization of poly(vinyl alcohol) microparticles coated with HA as targeting agent of HT‐29 cells . Versatile and multiresponsive hybrid HAAz/p(NiPAAm) constructs can be suitably designed as nanoparticles, highly selective for tumor cells thus enabling specific drug delivery.…”

“…Recently, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) capsules gained specific interest due to their chemical versatility that enables functionalisation with different ligands, for instance hyaluronic acid for the targeting of tumour cells and tissues [90]. The properties of the air-filled PVA capsules were compared to other polymer-coated capsules and commercially available bubbles with lipid and protein coatings [91].…”

“…29 The MBs and microgels also have the capability to act as a delivery vehicle for drugs or cytostatic agents. 32,33 Several attempts have been made to improve drug delivery systems in order to enhance stability, pharmacokinetics, bioavailability and biodistribution for several compounds. 34 For example, Villa et al have shown that MBs can be used for drug delivery of doxorubicin to cancer cells.…”
