Polymer–filler interactions in sol–gel derived polymer/silica hybrid nanocomposites

Abstract: The effect of polymer–filler interaction on solvent swelling and dynamic mechanical properties of the sol–gel derived acrylic rubber (ACM)/silica, epoxidized natural rubber (ENR)/silica, and poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/silica hybrid nanocomposites has been described for the first time. Tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) at three different concentrations (10, 30, and 50 wt %) was used as the precursor for in situ silica generation. Equilibrium swelling of the hybrid nanocomposites in respective solvents at ambient conditi… Show more

“…A borracha natural epoxidada (ENR) pode sofrer a reação de cura tanto pelas duplas ligações, pela vulcanização tradicional com enxofre, como também pelos grupos oxiranos [5] . Além disso, na literatura é descrito que o grupo epóxido é o responsável pela interação da ENR, aumentando a compatibilidade entre carga-polímeros [7][8][9] ou em misturas físicas [10,11] , e também em sistemas contendo agente de reticulação e alta energia (radiação UV, feixe de elétrons, etc.) [12][13][14] .…”

“…Nanometer-scale particles including spherical particles such as silica or titanium dioxide generated in situ by the sol-gel process [2][3][4][5][6][7], layered silicates [8][9][10][11], carbon [12] or clay fibers [13,14], carbon nanotubes [15,16] have been shown to significantly enhance the physical and mechanical properties of rubber matrices. The design of high performance materials has motivated increasing efforts for understanding the relationship between morphology of the reinforcing phase and the mechanical properties of the resulting composite.…”

“…It forms strong hydrogel owing to extensive intramolecular and intermolecular hydrogen bonding with water. 4,5 The water uptake property of PVA, that is, its swelling behavior can be modulated either by passive networking, that is, physically by annealing or chemical crosslinking using bifunctional crosslinkers, such as dianhydrides, 6 diisocyanates, 7 glutaraldehydes, 8,9 and so on, and boric acid, 10 which simultaneously reacts with multiple hydroxyl groups of PVA. Network density, in both cases, governs the swelling behavior.…”
