Polymer Composites in Aviation Sector

Abstract: Modern aerospace industry is highly progressive and polymer composite materials have a positive and significant impact on it. At least 30-40 percent of modern airframes are now made of these composites, and this percentage is increasing rapidly due to technological advances in this field. Fiberreinforced polymer composite materials are fast gaining ground as preferred materials for construction of aircrafts and space crafts. This review paper demonstrates brief about the components of polymer composites, its p… Show more

“…Polyamide, polycarbonates, polyurethanes, and polymethyl methacrylates have seen huge usages in aircraft. 44 However, failures of these materials are found to be catastrophic without much indication prior to failure. The aviation industry has continued usage of such material with enhanced inspection, health monitoring 45 mechanisms, and reduced lifetime of the parts.…”

“…Boeing 787 Dreamliner today uses about 50% of material as composite as compared to 12% in Boeing 777. 44 Advanced light helicopter developed by HAL uses about 30% of composite material against similar class of aircraft built in 1970 chetak cheetah wherein almost entire aircraft was metallic. Advanced sixth generation aircraft are made up to 45%-55% of composite structure.…”

“…It is also necessary to improve the technologies of their shaping. [1][2][3]. According to the analytical company Markets&Markets, the global carbon fiber market will reach $8 billion by 2026, the annual increase in PCM production is currently 8-10 % annually, and in two years from 2022 to 2024, PCM production will increase from 13 to 14 million tons.…”

“…Nowadays, carbon and aramid fiber-reinforced composite materials are widely used in many sectors such as railway, aviation, automotive, construction, etc. 1,2 Due to both possessing the low tensile failure strain of the fiber reinforcement material and the thermoset matrix structure can decompose at long curing times and high temperatures, composites need to be renewed. [3][4][5] Therefore, the hybridization technique has gained importance to eliminate the shortcomings of composite materials.…”
