Polyfuran conducting polymers: Synthesis, properties, and applications

Abstract: In this review, polyfuran (PFu) synthesis methods and the nucleation mechanism; the electrochemical, structural, morphological, and magnetic properties of PFu; thermal behavior; theoretical calculations on PFu, as well as its applications reported to date, have been compiled. Not only PFu homopolymers have been reviewed, but also PFu co-polymers, PFu bipolymers, and PFu composites. The results are listed, discussed, and compared. It is hoped that this assembly of all the relevant data might enhance knowledge a… Show more

“…Polymerization by ectropolymerization, metal-catalyzed coupling reactions, and chemical oxidative polymerization was successfully used for synthesis of polymers constructed of heterocyclic (pyrrole, thiophene, furan, etc) [26][27][28][29][30] and aromatic units (phenylene derivatives, aniline) [31][32][33][34][35][36][37], but also photochemical polymerization and polymerization cathalyzed by enzimes has been also applied [38,39] Method of chemical polymerization can be applied for synthesis of all types of conducting polymers, including those which cannot be obtained electrochemically [40]. On the other hand, the electroconductivity of polymers obtained chemically is lower compared to the electrochemically synthesized equivalent [41].…”

“…Nevertheless, the resource of furan is much greater, and thus, furan is much less expensive than pyrrole, aniline and thiophene, because the furan comes from an agricultural and sideline product that is a reproducible resource. These characteristics will attract the attention of more scientists in chemistry and materials science [18].…”
