Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Surface Water of the Southeastern Japan Sea

Abstract: Surface water samples were collected at 15 sampling sites in the southeastern Japan Sea along the Japanese Archipelago for analysis of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Water samples were fractionated by filtration through a glass fiber membrane (pore size 0.5 µm) and analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection. Thirteen PAHs having 3 to 6 rings were found in the dissolved phase (DP) and 12 were found in the particulate phase (PP). The total (DP PP) PAH concentration r… Show more

“…A high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) system was employed for the PAH analyses. PAHs were extracted from seawater samples using the solid-phase extraction method developed by Hayakawa et al (2016) [16], as described in detail by Nagato et al (2019) [18]. Particulate and dissolved phases were separated by filtration through 0.5 µm glass-fiber filters (GC50, Advantec, Japan), as early as possible, after sampling.…”

“…To calculate the loss by extraction procedures, recoveries of Phe-d10 was utilized for Ace, Fle, Ant, and recoveries of Pyr-d10 for Flu, Pyr, BaA, Chr, BbF, BkF, BaP, DBA, BPe, and IDP. [20][21][22]. It must be noted that BaA presented considerably higher photo-degradation rates than Chr, which affected the source appointment by the isomer ratios method.…”

“…Os hidrocarbonetos policíclicos aromáticos (HPAs) são compostos orgânicos que apresentam em sua estrutura química pelo menos dois anéis aromáticos, sendo o naftaleno (C10H8), o composto mais simples deste grupo, são considerados contaminantes ambientais ubíquos (Hayakawa, et al 2016).…”
