Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in Chinese surface soil: occurrence and distribution

Abstract: In this study, 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were analyzed in 157 concurrently collected soil samples in 2005 over China. Higher concentration of ∑ 16 PAHs was found in urban soil, followed by rural and background soil. The results indicated that PAHs in Chinese surface soil showed a primary distribution pattern, which was confirmed by the positive correlation with emission inventory.

“…On a continental scale, the distribution of PAHs in soil reflects regional differences in the degree of economic development and population density121314. For instance, soil PAH concentrations in eastern China are higher than those in western China because of unbalanced development15. On a regional scale, the distribution of PAHs is associated primarily with the expansion of urbanization16.…”

“…S3). These findings are not surprising as PAHs in forest soils are showing the general distribution pattern and the effect of primary sources were greater than the soil organic carbon to force PAHs in soil to be associated with its contents on a nationwide scale 14, 32 .…”

“…The PAHs distribution levels were compared with those previously calculated emission inventories from China 14, 33 . Spatial distribution patterns showed that significantly higher concentrations were measured from Shanxi, Shaanxi, Sichuan, Jinlin and Heilongjiang provinces.…”

“…The omnipresence of PAHs in the polar regions and snowy mountains has been well documented (Nam et al 2008;Wang et al 2007). The emission and accumulation of PAHs have aroused broad concerns due to their carcinogenic toxicity to human health (Ma et al 2015;Vane et al 2014;Wang et al 2015).…”
