“…In general, these findings are accordant with previous studies with binary mixtures of PAHs in vitro, reporting scarce antagonist effects in favour of agonist and potentially synergic responses and effects, depending on concentration of the compounds and endpoint (e.g. Staal et al, 2007;Tarantini et al, 2011). Nonetheless, antagonist effects resulting from PAH interactions have already been reported, especially for CYP-related responses, as it may be suspected from the present findings (see Jarvis et al, 2014, for a review).…”

“…Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons appear to be significant contributors to the genotoxicity and carcinogenicity of air pollution present in the environment for humans, and the most extensively studied member of this class of chemicals is B(a)P. Populations exposed to environmental air pollution show increased levels of PAH-DNA adducts and it has been postulated that another contributing cause of carcinogenicity by environmental air pollution may be the production of ROS following oxidative stress leading to oxidative DNA damage [21,22] . B(a)P itself is unreactive, but it is converted to a highly reactive electrophile by enzymes involved in drug metabolism [23] .…”

“…EMS and H2O2 were chosen because they are genotoxic and are often used as positive controls in the comet assay. B[a]P was used because it has been tested as a weakly genotoxic to non-genotoxic compound in the comet assay with HepG2 cells [14,15]. Except for B[a]P, the concentrations were chosen in order to obtain a concentration-response effect.…”
