Polycrystalline Aluminum Oxynitride Hugoniot and Optical Properties

Abstract: Role of surface-to-volume ratio of metal nanoparticles in optical properties of Cu : Al 2 O 3 nanocomposite films Abstract. Aluminum oxynitride (AlON) is an interesting ceramic because it is both polycrystalline and transparent. We have conducted plate impact experiments to measure the Hugoniot up to 100 GPa and the spall strength up to the HEL. AlON appears to loose spall strength completely under certain conditions, perhaps due to the propagation of a failure wave. It remains transparent, however, up to at l… Show more

“…[66][67][68][69] The densities and elastic properties of the materials used in these investigations are given in Table 3. 65 The elastic response of AlON under shock wave propagation, reflected in the Hugoniot elastic limit (HEL), did not indicate any significant deviations from expectations.…”

“…These investigations have dealt with: (1) shock wave compression of AlON to determine its equation of state, shear strength sustained under shock wave compression and spall strength, [66][67][68][69] (2) onset of damage in AlON under uniaxial stress loading, 70 (3) and under edge-on impact (EOI) using dynamic photoelasticity. 71 Since defects can play a critical role in severe impact events (certainly in quasi-static mechanical stress), it is essential to unambiguously quantify their affect on failure.…”

“…In this form, the crystal structure is a nitrogen‐stabilized cubic spinel with an ambient density of 3.67 g/cm 3 8,9 . The HEL is reported to be 10–12 GPa, 10,11 providing greater yield strength than either of the two polycrystalline end compounds. At ambient pressure, the longitudinal elastic wave speed is 10.4 km/s, which increases linearly with the particle velocity over the elastic range, although at only 2/3 the rate of sapphire 10 .…”

At the specified mixture ratio, the material remains optically transparent up to at least 5 GPa 10 .…”
